Crease

Unconventional joinery methods inspired me to take the next step and pursue a specific principle. There is something to the precise fit created by a round piece of leather, filling out extra space around a leg, alowing it to connect to a flat surface. On top of the functional aspect, this creased tablecloth-like detail adds a special touch to the design. When we expand the principle into a multi-layered piece of furniture —in this case a shelf unit— we need to resort to a thinner pliable material to avoid the piling up of too much material around the leg at the bottom. Still, the method creates an exciting play of mass, weight and pressure.
